Those who follow his career also know Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the TV series Firefly. But most agree that the character of Castle fits Fillion like a 9 mm in a cop’s shoulder holster.

What attracted you to the role of Rick Castle?

NF: Someone was telling me about the script and kind of saying that there was nothing really great about it. But one night, I had seven scripts to read and it was the last one. I started reading it while I was sitting next to my girlfriend and I was about 15 pages in when said to her, “I’m going to read you this script like a radio play and you tell me if you don’t think this is great.” After 15 pages, I knew this was going to be a lot of fun. I knew exactly what to do, exactly how to play this guy. I knew this part would be an audition scene and I knew what every other actor’s would do, but I knew what I was going to do—and it would be different. And when I met the producers, I said, “stop looking, I’m this guy. This is me, inside and out.”

You may have heard that Eden Riegel (Heather Stevens, “The Young and the Restless”) and Victor Webster (ex-Nicholas Alamain, “Days of our Lives”) would be appearing in the upcoming season of ABC’s hit primetime drama series “Castle,” but I bet you didn’t know when that episode would air, did you?

First of all, in case you’re wondering, it doesn’t work this way in real life fiction writing. You can’t take private citizens you know, just change their names, and portray them in recognizable form in a novel. Authors have been sued successfully for less.

But overlooking that bit of license, the translation of a fictional situation into a fiction of a fictional situation works very well here. The reader can easily imagine the television characters under their new names, and the dialogue is even better than on the screen (which is saying a lot; it’s a well-written show).

“When you are so blessed, it becomes difficult to wish and want for more,” he insisted.

Fillion previously starred in sci-fi drama Firefly and later played Alex Tully in Drive. Both shows were axed by Fox prior to the conclusion of the first season.

The “Castle” team may not start out Season 3 on the best of terms — remember that clip of Beckett (Stana Katic), Esposito (Jon Huertes) and Ryan (Seamus Dever) cornering Castle (Nathan Fillion) and calling him a scumbag? — but at least they can set aside their differences long enough for a formal-wear photo shoot.

ABC has the first crop of photos from Season 3, and, gee, everyone sure looks nice all dolled up. Maybe we can hope for 12th precinct gala dinner dance… You know, after all of those messy murder accusations get cleared up.

That’s why he’s formulated a new plan to “shake it up” this season, and he told me all about it at last night’s HBO Emmy party. I gotta tell you guys, it’s bananas! Bananas, I say! What is this evil television genius cooking up?

Castle’s executive producer Andrew Marlowe has revealed that he thinks Castle and Beckett will eventually begin a relationship.

However, Marlowe suggested that it will be some time before the pair start a romance.

“There will come a time in the series when [a relationship] will be worth exploring,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “But I don’t think the characters are ready to go to that level now.”
